Experience with Hammertoe Fixation

Christopher Hyer DPM, FACFAS of Ohio recently published his insight on Hammertoe Correction and the evolving technology that is now available for fixating hammertoes as an alternative to k-wire fixation. He comments on hammertoe correction and his experience with the Wright Medical Pro-Toe VO, the MMI (Stryker) Smart Toe, and the Tornier StayFuse Implant. Dr. Hyer concluded the importance of being comfortable with multiple devices and techniques, as one must tailor implant selection to patients individually.

Hammertoe Challenges & Foot Innovate

Footinnovate.com and presenter Dr. Robert Anderson, MD will be hosting an online training session Hammertoe Challenges next Wednesday, August 31, 2011. With Wright Medical Technology participating with the session, I can only imagine that the discussion will involve their new hammertoe implant, the Pro-Toe VO.  

The Pro-Toe VO was released to the market earlier this year and is one of the latest options on the market that enables foot and ankle surgeons and patients the option of burring the implant internally as an alternative to the traditional external K-wire. Wright Medical Announces the Commercial Launch of the PRO-TOE VO Hammertoe Fixation System

Wright Medical Group announced the full commercial release of the PRO-TOE^TM VO Hammertoe Fixation System and was featured at the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons March in Fort Lauderdale, FL (March 9-12,2011). The implant is the first metal internal hammertoe implant for Wright Medical. Jason Edie, Director of Research and Development, commented, "The PRO-TOE^TM VO Hammertoe system offers a number of advantages over the present implant options. The implant's construction provides a solid and secure fixation that prevents shortening of the toe. The implant is also fabricated from stainless steel which simplifies the procedure by eliminating the freezer storage and special instruments required for other implant alternatives.”
